CREATE an Online Giving Webpage
LAS encourages departments to create a page on their website that can accept private gifts, and link to it from your homepage. However, there are rules and processes that apply, which are subject to change.
To help ensure that your site is both accurate and effective, the LAS Office of Advancement has established these guidelines to use in either creating a new giving page or making changes to an existing one. Please feel free to contact the office for questions and advice.
Steps to Prepare Your Giving Page
As you create your site, remember that if people click on the link to this page, that is an indication that they are likely ready to get down to the busines of giving. Make that easy for them by following this model.
-
Write a draft of the content you wish to post on your giving page, using the sample text below as a guide.
-
Limit the choice of funds to which people can give. Departments are encouraged to list their Annual Fund, and at MOST one or two additional funds that have special appeal to donors. It is in your best interests to be highly selective in the choices you offer, otherwise your department will run the risk of diluting its gifts to the point that none of the funds is sufficient to accomplish its purpose. The Annual Fund offers the greatest flexibility for distributing funds. Please discuss your choice of funds with LAS’s Annual Funds officer.
-
Use the consistent terminology recommended by the U of I Foundation. The proper name for these pages and links to them are variations of “Giving.” Thus, you may use “Make a Gift” or “Give Online.” However, within the text of the giving pages, you may ask people to “Support XYZ program” or “Contribute to XYZ.” Do not use “donate.” The Foundation does not use this term because they want to encourage longer-term, more substantial giving than is implied by donation.
-
- Send the website text to the LAS Office of Advancement for review. Have the text be as complete and close to final as possible. This request applies to new pages and ones that are being updated. Send the text or a link to the webpages we are to review to lasgifts@illinois.edu.
- Obtain fund account numbers. LAS Office of Advancement will provide the fund account numbers you will need at the same time that it reviews your copy.
- Your site will link directly to U of I Foundation. The Foundation has a secure giving site capable of handling credit/debit cards. LAS Office of Advancement will provide instructions on how to link to this site to whomever will be programming your webpage.
- Consider additional pages. Initially, you should concentrate on creating this single giving page. However, in the future, you may want to add pages that explain your vision as well as offer greater detail on how the funds are used. You may also want to add a page with compelling stories about people and programs that have benefited from gifts.
- Optional photo. A nice touch to your giving page is a photo of students, who will remind donors of the ultimate beneficiaries of their gifts. However, include this element only if the photo is of high quality. A photo that is poorly composed or shot will only make your site look amateurish and diminish its impact.
Sample Text
The text below is a good example of the elements that are most important to have on your giving page. Later, you may to add pages linked to your site of (1) compelling examples of how gifts have been used in your unit and (2) a short list of priorities.
