Advice from the Class of 2011

Tips on what it takes to succeed at U of I from the real experts--fellow students.

On Developing Good Study Habits

  • Don't procrastinate; stay on top of your schoolwork because it is hard to play catch-up later.
  • Limit your time on social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace; it's easy to waste hours of time.
  • Make a schedule to budget your time for study hours, meals, sleeping hours, and breaks.

On Staying Focused

  • Take advantage of the undergraduate library: It forces you to get work done and become more efficient in your studying.
  • Go to office hours! Your TAs and professors really do want to help you.

On Extracurricular Activities

  • Go to Quad Day!
  • Take advantage of the different events that are always happening on campus.
  • Get involved by joining a hall council, volunteering, or checking out registered student organizations on the second floor in the Illini Union.

On Adjusting to Campus

  • Although it will take awhile, you'll adjust to having a roommate, using the public bathrooms, and the dorm food.
  • Leave your door open--you'll meet a lot of new people who just pop in to say "hi!"
  • Try not to be too attached to high school friends. Meeting new people will open new doors for you and will get your mind off missing home.

Advisory Council

The LAS Learning Community Advisory Council is made up of students who have just successfully completed the LAS 100 or LAS 111 course. These students are so enthusiastic about the program that they volunteer their time to make it even better. They know what students want and they enhance the program with that in mind.
