This ceremony is reserved only for students who earned degrees in August 2016 or December 2016, and did not participate in Winter Convocation, and for May 2017 degree candidates. Bachelor's and master's degree candidates meeting August 2017 degree requirements are eligible to participate, as well. Please note that PhD candidates must have their dissertation on file in the Graduate College Thesis Office by the spring filing deadline to be eligible.
This ceremony is in addition to the campuswide Commencement Ceremony at Memorial Stadium.
Degree holders and candidates will be sent information about registration for and participation in the ceremony by early March.
You must register to participate in the ceremony and reserve tickets for your guests. Registration closed Sunday, April 9, 2017.
Instructions for graduates
Please read these instructions carefully to ensure your graduation day goes smoothly.
Tickets are required for this event. Tickets are free. Every person who attends (except graduating students), including infants and toddlers, will need a ticket. Tickets will be available through the student’s home department—information regarding pick-up times and locations will be sent at the end of April or the beginning of May.
Because of possible seating limitations in the Colwell Playhouse of the Krannert Center, ticket distribution will be limited to four tickets initially. If others become available, those requesting more than four will be provided tickets on a first-come, first-served basis. Students may request a maximum of eight tickets.
Tickets are limited, so early registration is highly recommended. Your registration information will also be used to prepare a card that will be handed to the reader on stage and to provide the photographer with contact information, so please provide accurate information.
Graduate students: When registering, please also indicate your faculty advisor and your dissertation title.
You must register at the ceremony registration website to attend and receive tickets for your guests. Registration will open Wednesday, March 1, 2017, and close Sunday, April 9, 2017.
(If you reside outside of the Champaign-Urbana area, you will have been asked to indicate this in the “comment” section of the registration form. Your tickets and information will be mailed to you by your graduating unit.)
For full details about renting, purchasing, picking up and returning academic attire, please see the campus' commencement website.
If you would like to audition to be the student convocation speaker, please contact your department representative by noon Friday, March 3, 2017. You will receive further information, including audition dates (tentatively scheduled for the last week of March). Your speech should be about five minutes long, and you will be required to provide the full text of your talk at the audition.
Personalized graduation announcements may be purchased through the Illini Union Bookstore, 809 S. Wright St., Champaign, or from Herff-Jones. Announcements are also available through local bookstores and copy shops.
Krannert Center for the Performing Arts
500 S. Goodwin Ave., Urbana
Parking is free and available in the Krannert Center’s parking garage. See the campus parking map for additonal information.
Students with guests who require special assistance and/or seating at the ceremony should contact the Krannert Center's Director of Patron Services Nicholas Puddicombe by email or calling (217) 333-9716.
Students must report to the basement below Colwell Playhouse at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts no later than 1:15 p.m. that day. You must be wearing your regalia; there will be no spare caps or gowns available.
The convocation will begin with a procession of faculty and administrators, followed by graduating students, into the hall. During the ceremony, you will be called to the stage and your name will be read aloud as you cross the stage and receive your diploma cover.
Your family and guests can go directly to the Colwell Playhouse Theater for seating. Doors open at 1 p.m.
Professional photographers will be at the ceremony to take your picture as you receive your diploma. Proofs will be sent to the email address provided by the graduate with no obligation to purchase. Additional photos may be ordered online.
Because it is not possible to process grades and prepare degree lists by the day of the commencement, diplomas will be mailed approximately six weeks after graduation.
Please go into the UI Integrate Self-Service application and enter or update "Diploma Address," which is the address the University will use for mailing your diploma.
- If the diploma is returned to the Office of Admissions and Records, you will be responsible for providing the correct address and paying for any forwarding mail charges, as well as a processing fee.
- If your diploma is not returned to the Office of Admissions and Records, you will be responsible for providing the correct address and paying for the cost of the replacement diploma.
An email from the Office of the Registrar will be sent to all potential graduates about three weeks before commencement asking them to verify their name and address and make corrections if necessary.
