James Scholar program requirements
Students must be full-time (12 credit hours per semester) to retain eligibility in the James Scholar Program. One underload (semester below 12 hours) is allowed if approved by the College of LAS.
Students must have a cumulative University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign GPA of 3.50 at the end of every academic year to meet the GPA requirement of the James Scholar Program in LAS. At the completion of their first semester at Illinois, first-year LAS James Scholars must have an Illinois cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 in order to continue as a James Scholar.
Illinois Code of Conduct on Academic Integrity and the LAS James Scholar Program:
James Scholars and nominees are held responsible for adherence to the rules for Academic Integrity at Illinois (Code of Policies and Regulations Applying to all Students, Article 1, Part 4). Students who are found to have been penalized within the scope of Article 1, Part 4 will automatically forfeit their LAS James Scholar membership and privileges.
Please see our FAQ page for more information about the James Scholar requirements.
Students entering the program in Fall 2015 or later:
Students must earn at least 4 honors points for each academic year they are a part of the LAS James Scholar Program. Students must earn points in academic (A) categories as well as enrichment (E) categories. The number of years you are a member of the program will determine the number of points you need to earn overall, as well as the number of points that need to come from academic versus enrichment categories.
- 4 years as LAS James Scholar: 16 honors points – 10 academic and 6 enrichment
- 3 years as LAS James Scholar: 12 honors points – 8 academic and 4 enrichment
- 2 years as LAS James Scholar: 8 honors points – 5 academic and 3 enrichment
- 1 year as LAS James Scholar: 4 honors points – 3 academic and 1 enrichment
To receive annual James Scholar Certification (completed at the end of spring semester each academic year), students must maintain an Illinois cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher (first-year LAS James Scholars must have an Illinois cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 at the end of their first semester) and the following:
- End of first year as LAS James Scholar: 4 points
- End of second year as LAS James Scholar: 8 points
- End of third year as LAS James Scholar: 12 points
- End of fourth year as LAS James Scholar: 16 points
Honors points should be earned over the student's entire career at the University of Illinois.
Tracking your accomplishments:
LAS James Scholars will be intentional about the ways in which they will earn their honors points.
Therefore, students must submit any and all experiences they intend to use for honors points to their online James Scholar Portfolio system along with any required pre-approval forms by the deadline provided each semester (typically the end of the sixth week of class).
Students must also submit any required documentation of experiences accomplished by the last day of finals in the semester in which the experience was completed in order to be reviewed by LAS Honors. No late submission of semester plans or documentation will be accepted.
Refer to the experience descriptions for required pre-approval form and documentation information.
Students who entered the program in Spring 2015 or earlier
The prior requirements to remain a part of the LAS James Scholar Honors Program are based on two things: GPA and Honors Credit. Certification for all James Scholars in LAS is completed at the end of each academic year.
GPA: Cumulative University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign GPA of 3.50 is required at the end of every academic year.
Honors Credit: Two courses (2 or 3 credits each) taken for honors credit must be completed per academic year with a grade of B- or better to receive Honors Credit.
The honors course requirement may be waived for a semester for the following experiences:
- Completing a 500-level course
- A semester abroad
- Completing student teaching requirements
- Conducting at least 50 hours of preapproved research during a single semester
- Completing 25 hours of preapproved community service with a single Champaign-Urbana organization in a single semester
- Completing a department-approved internship or co-op off campus (taking a semester off from classes in order pursue this opportunity)
Tracking your accomplishments:
Students on the prior requirements must use the online James Scholar Portfolio system to indicate their intentions and submit the appropriate required forms by the deadline provided each semester (typically the end of the sixth week of class).
