Honors point options

James Scholars who enrolled in fall 2015 or later must earn at least 16 honors points during their time with the LAS James Scholar Program. Students must earn at least 10 academic (A) points and at least 6 enrichment (E) points. Learn more about the requirements for current James scholars, or see our FAQ page for more information.

Honors courses

Honors courses are available either through taking an Honors Integrated Course or working on projects with faculty. Any course in which the student is currently enrolled can potentially be turned into an Honors Course with the agreement of the faculty member. These projects must be mutually agreed upon, with all requirements and expectations outlined in the Electronic Honors Credit Learning Agreement (EHCLA).

LAS 122 1 1 Add the course to your semester plan. All incoming first-year, first-semester James Scholars will enroll in LAS 122, our first year seminar course. Students who earn a B- or higher in the course are eligible to earn an honors grade.
2 credit-hour honors course (preapproval required for EHCLAs) 1 2 EHCLA if not an integrated honors course. These courses may be integrated courses or EHCLA courses. If you are completing an EHCLA, you must submit the student portion of your EHCLA by the deadline provided each semester. Whether the course is an integrated honors course or an EHCLA course, students must earn a B- or higher in the course to earn an honors grade. An honors or "H" grade must be reflected on the student's record before honors points will be awarded for this experience.
3 or more credit-hour honors course (preapproval required for EHCLAs) 2 8 EHCLA if not an integrated honors course. These courses may be integrated courses or EHCLA courses. If you are completing an EHCLA you must submit the student portion of your EHCLA by the deadline provided each semester. Whether the course is an integrated honors course or an EHCLA course, students must earn a B- or higher in the course to earn an honors grade. An honors or "H" grade must be reflected on the student's record before honors points will be awarded for this experience.
REACT for Chemistry courses: be sure to register for REACT. Not sure how to register? Contact the REACT Program. In eligible chemistry courses, students may use REACT as an honors project to make their chemistry course eligible for an honors grade. Students must still earn a B- or higher in the course to earn an honors grade and the honors or "H" grade must be reflected on the student's record before honors points will be awarded.
500-level course 2 6 Add the course to your semester plan. Students may not earn an honors grade in a 500-level or graduate-level course, but successful completion of the course is eligible for honors points.
Honors LLC Course 1 2 Add the course to your semester plan. Only Honors LLC members are eligible to enroll in these courses. Please consult with the Honors LLC for additional information on the course.

Faculty-directed independent study or research (preapproval required through Honors Experience Request Form) 1-2 4 Honors Experience Request Form. Students who are conducting research or independent study under the supervision of a faculty member, staff member, or graduate student are eligible to use that experience for honors points. Students must complete at least 50 hours of research in a single semester in order to earn one academic point. Students who completed at least 100 hours or more of research in a single semester will earn two academic points. All students must complete the Honors Experience Request Form for their research experience regardless of whether or not they are enrolled in credit hours for their research.
Presentation at a preapproved regional conference 1 1 Honors Experience Request Form. The Undergraduate Research Symposium on campus each spring is eligible in this category. Students must submit the Honors Experience Request Form by the deadline provided each semester.
Presentation at a preapproved national conference 2 4 Honors Experience Request Form. Students must submit the Honors Experience Request Form by the deadline provided each semester.
Publication in refereed undergraduate journal 1 1 Letter/email of acceptance or url of publication. Check out these undergraduate research journals on campus.
Publication in refereed professional journal 2 4 Letter/email of acceptance or url of publication.
Senior thesis 2 4 EHCLA. In order to use your senior thesis experience for honors, students must either be enrolled in an integrated honors course for their thesis hours, or complete an EHCLA for each semester of thesis coursework for which they are enrolled.

Induction into Phi Beta Kappa 1 1 Add to your semester plan. Your induction will be verified by the Phi Beta Kappa coordinator. For information on Phi Beta Kappa eligibility, please see the campus chapter's website.
Complete second major 1 1 Name of second major.
Complete dual degree 2 2 Documentation that shows approval of dual degree.

Service

Campus involvement

Complete an iBox 1 2 Refer to your online portfolio. iBox is a collection of experiences that individually are not worth honors points. If you complete a certain number of those experiences within a semester, collectively, they are worth one honors point. Refer to the portfolio system for additional information about each semester's iBox.

Internship

Serve as an LAS 101/122 Intern 2 4 Course number. Rising juniors and seniors are eligible to apply. Applications are available annually beginning in January for the following academic year.
