Program Summary

World environment and sustainability (E & S) issues cannot be addressed in isolation from each other. The objective of this seminar abroad is to provide students with a comparative (U.S. vs. Middle-East-centered) understanding of E & S issues in an international setting, and hence equip them with experience to expand their global perspective. Facing water shortage and environmental problems, Jordan will serve as our case study of the Middle East-centered concerns, and in this seminar students will learn about the issues of environment and sustainability as seen by Jordanians and by the broader Arab world.

To complement our studies on the environment and sustainability, we also spend time learning about Jordanian language and culture. Morning lectures on environmental issues will include a cultural component so that students can better understand their host country and how it manages environmental concerns. Afternoon and evening programs include interactions with NGOs working in the area of E & S, visits to Jordanian secondary and high schools to gauge the youth perspective, as well as interaction with the Jordanian and other foreign students at Jordan University of Science and Technology. Visits to famous historical sites (Petra of Indiana Jones fame, Dead Sea, Jarash, etc.) are also a part of the program.

Program Fee

$2,450 for LAS students. (TBA for other students; check with your college for scholarships.)

• Includes: Round-trip airfare, on-site airport transfers, housing, most meals, orientation programs, site visits and excursions, and international health insurance.
• Does Not Include: Books or personal expenses.
