LAS 101 Freshman Seminar Interns are accomplished juniors and seniors who are willing to share their college experiences with first-term students by serving as student mentors.
They each lead a section of the LAS 101 Freshman Seminar and are really excited to meet their students.
They are among the best and brightest of our LAS students and we are very fortunate to have them with us for the fall semester.

Apply to be an LAS 101 Freshman Seminar intern
LAS 101 Freshman Seminar interns are an incredibly important part of LAS 101, the course that helps our first-year students adjust to college life. LAS interns meet with their LAS 101 classes, which have 20 to 25 students, for one hour once a week.
An LAS 101 internship offers our best students the opportunity to help others while developing leadership skills. Interns will receive credit for their work with LAS 101. They will be enrolled in LAS 399: Leadership and Professional Development for both the second eight weeks of spring 2017 and the full fall 2017 semester.

Welcome to the University of Illinois and the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences! I'm so excited to serve as the director of LAS 101: Freshman Seminar. This class has been designed to give you, our first-year students, the best start possible on your college careers. You'll learn so much about our campus and the rigors of college life. This class is facilitated by the LAS 101 interns, who are successful upper-class men and women. They are passionate about U of I and want to help you get on the right path toward your own successful years here on campus and beyond. They have some great lessons to share with you. My name is Carrie Allen and I am a doctoral student in the Education Policy, Organization and Leadership Department in the College of Education. I am originally from Pine Bluff, Arkansas. I received a BA in English from Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, and an EdM in Higher Education from Illinois. I am excited for the opportunity to get to know you as you transition to college life, and I am confident that LAS 101 can help you build a foundation that will prepare you for your college career and beyond. Hello! My name is Courtney Pierre Cain, and I am a doctoral candidate in history. My dissertation focuses on the formation of the Haitian diaspora in Chicago in the 20th century, and I am personally invested in this project as a first-generation Haitian girl from Chicago. I love to teach and work with college students, so I hope to teach history or do academic advising after I graduate.
Greetings! I am a doctoral student in the Educational Psychology department. I am originally from Indiana but have lived and traveled in quite a few places in the U.S. and around the world. I received my BA in Japanese Studies from Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, and my MATESL at Illinois. I taught ESL to international students at the Intensive English Institute at Illinois for six years. I've also taught in elementary schools in Germany and Saudi Arabia and middle schools in Japan and Washington, D.C. My research interests include exploring issues such as parenting that occur in early childhood that have an effect on individuals later on, especially during the transition to college. I look forward to meeting and working with you this year!

Hi — I'm MJ, the tech liaison for LAS 101 and 102. My primary job is to maintain the Moodle website, but I also help out with program development and events. This is my fifth year with the program, and it's been fun watching the incoming freshmen advance through the college, sometimes becoming LAS 101 interns themselves. I am from Atlanta, and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration, and a masterâ€™s of education in higher education leadership. My name is Ibrahim Abubakar and I am a junior majoring in English and minoring in secondary education! I find it necessary for younger generations to have prominent role models to help guide them through the different transitions that they will have in life. Moreover, I plan to do the same for you guys! I will be your helping hand that will get you acquainted with the different resources and opportunities that we have on campus. I'm a junior majoring in actuarial science and minoring in business. I recently finished an internship with CNA, working on pricing policies in workers' compensation. On campus, I serve as Nugent Hall's multicultural advocate and the vice president of internal affairs for the Actuarial Science Club. I have lived in various Illinois suburbs, including Hickory Hills, Homer Glen, Aurora, Elwood, and Monee. I can't wait to hear about all of the amazing experiences awaiting you on campus!
Hey new Illini! I hope you're having a fantastic start here at Illinois. So, obviously my name is Sebastian. Yes, like Parks & Recreation's Li'l Sebastian, and yes, like the crab from the Disney movie (that's usually people's first reaction upon learning my name!). I am majoring in psychology with junior standing. I aspire to earn a doctoral degree and ultimately work as an industrial-organizational psychologist. I am passionate about cultivating a healthy and happy state of mind in everything people love to do, especially in their workplace. Attending U of I has been one of the best decisions I've made and I hope you all fall in love with our beautiful campus, just as I have. I am currently a junior majoring in molecular and cellular biology, with dreams to pursue a career in the medical field. I am also a resident adviser at Wassaja Hall. In my free time I enjoy listening to music, traveling, and spending time with my family and friends. Hi everyone! I'm Shivani, a current junior studying communications and minoring in business. One of my college goals is to stay as active as possible on campus; some of my organizations include Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity, and Communication Leaders. I also hope that I am able to have a big impact on someone's life, whether it be serving as a mentor or being role model to underclassmen. Some of my long-term goals include working at a corporation in the fields of marketing, communications, or human resources. Hopefully from there, I will be able to pursue my law degree and become a lawyer. Some of my other hobbies and interests include philanthropy work, painting, and writing.

After I graduate, I hope to pursue a career in medicine. When I'm not in class, you can find me doing research in Professor Schuler's lab for my senior thesis, working athletic events for Illini Emergency Medical Services, fundraising for Children's Miracle Network with Phi Delta Epsilon premedical fraternity, recruiting admitted students to the MCB major through MCB Leaders, or hanging out at my sorority. Hello class of 2020—this is my second year as an LAS 101 intern and I am a senior majoring in Integrative Biology, with a minor in Chemistry. On campus, I am an active member of several clubs, regularly volunteer for the R.E.A.C.T. program where we introduce basic chemistry concepts to elementary school children, work at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, as well as assist in Dr. Fuller's ichthyology (fish) research lab.
Hi, my name is Denise Branch and I was born and live in New York City. My parents are both from the Caribbean and immigrated to the U.S. after they finished high School. I am a junior student-athlete for the University of Illinois. I am on the varsity cross country and track teams. I am majoring in sociology and minoring in French linguistics. I plan to go to law School upon graduation in 2018 to become a criminal prosecutor or open my open law practice. When I am not running or doing school work, I really enjoy shopping, fine dining, or practicing doing makeup.
Hello! I am going to be a junior this fall. I'm majoring in integrative biology and I'm still trying to figure out the exact direction of my future. I am an avid animal lover and have been riding horses since I was little. I have the world's best family and often find myself spending too much time face-timing my dogs. I'm planning on studying abroad second semester of this coming year in Australia and hope to travel more in the future. I spent the summer working on my family's farm doing things from building tables to helping plan weddings. I love being outside and enjoying the people and things around me.
Welcome Class of 2020! My name is Angelica Cabrera. I was born and raised in Chicago and am a senior majoring in integrative biology. During my summers, I volunteer for Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and work at my former grade school's summer school. On campus, I am an undergraduate research assistant in Dr. Karen Sears' lab and volunteer at Carle Hospital. I also spend a lot of time at the campus ice arena as a customer service assistant. In my free time, I enjoy reading, watching movies, and playing basketball. After graduation I hope to be attending medical school to pursue a career as a pediatrician. Hi! My name is Maggie Carlson and I am a senior at the University of Illinois. I am pursuing an cconomics major and a business minor. I hope to find a career in either finance, consulting, or investment banking when I graduate. This past summer, I interned for Northern Trust Corporation in the Asset Management Marketing division. Along with being a LAS 101 Intern, I am involved in many different groups on campus. I am on the traveling club tennis team, as well as an active member of my sorority, Pi Beta Phi. I also serve as an Economics Ambassador for the Economics Department. Lastly, I am an active participant at events at St. John's Catholic Newman Center. Welcome, class of 2020! My name is Marialicia and I am currently a senior in molecular and cellular biology with a minor in chemistry. Last year, I was fortunate to study abroad in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, and explore Europe. On campus, I am on the executive board of LIP and a member of Alpha Phi Omega and Illinois Medical Screening Society. I also work as a certified nursing assistant and tutor students at Leal Elementary School in Urbana. Ultimately, I aspire to practice medicine as a physician or a PA. In my spare time, I love spending time with friends and family, attending group fitness classes, traveling, and watching "Friends" episodes. Welcome, first-year students! My name is Zhangying Chen. I can go by Jennie, which coincidentally sounds close to my real name. I am from Zhejiang Province, which is located in southeastern China. Currently, I am a senior majoring in integrative biology and minoring in adult development. My life goal is to become a physician. I've spent three wonderful years at Illinois and can't wait to roll up my sleeves, dig in, and start my senior year.

After finishing undergrad, I hope to go on to get a master's in library sciences and work as a high-school librarian. Here at Illinois, I've kept myself very busy! I work at two different libraries on campus and as an ISTAR. I'm also an active member of my sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi, and the president of the history honors society, Phi Alpha Theta. Hi guys! My name is Katie Diol and I am a junior studying molecular and cellular biology with an intent to go to medical school. I am getting ready to take the MCAT this year and start the application process. Here on campus, I'm involved in Phi Delta Epsilon, a premedicine professional fraternity and I was a member of the Fighting Illini Cheerleading team. Hello, my name is Pedro Escobedo and I am a junior majoring in molecular and cellular biology. In addition to majoring in MCB, I also decided to minor in chemistry and Spanish. Since high school, I've wanted to pursue a career in the medical field. Currently, I am studying to attend medical school with an interest in neurology and oncology. I participate in a variety of extracurriculars such as LAS Leaders, Phi Delta Epsilon, and work as tutor at the Office of Minority Student Affairs. This past semester, I was elected to serve as an Illinois Student Senator for the 2016-2017 academic year. I also enjoy volunteering at Carle hospital. Hello! My name is Keegan and I am a senior studying communication. My hope is to find a job in marketing or public relations. I think it would be really cool to be a brand manager for a really popular product. This past summer I interned at a social media/digital marketing company called 10X Studios. I created social media content and campaigns for multiple brands. It was challenging but a lot of fun. Commuting to Chicago, however, not so much. I'm a big fan of tennis, politics, the Cubs, and The Office. On campus, I am involved with multiple organizations including the Department of Communication Leaders, the Public Relations Student Society of America, and Alpha Phi Omega.

As a Golden Apple Scholar, I hope to teach high school social sciences after college and eventually pursue a graduate degree in education. On campus, I have the best job ever at La Casa Cultural Latina and I also tutor fourth-graders at a local elementary school. I am also a McNair Scholar who enjoys doing research on education and health. I am a new member of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority. This summer, I will study abroad in Valparaiso, Chile, in where I will have the opportunity to be in the classroom observing high-school students. The goal is to head to medical school after graduation and specialize in orthopedics. Hi everyone! I am Adrian Gonzalez and I am going to be a senior this coming fall. I am originally from Westmont, Illinois, but recently moved to Bolingbrook, Illinois. I am a statistics major and am earning a minor in business as well as in philosophy. I studied abroad this past spring semester in the United Kingdom. Studying abroad was one of the best experiences I have had at the University of Illinois. I learned so much about world politics and even a great deal about the United States and its history. I traveled through Europe, visiting four countries. During my travels, I met many different people, as well, and established lasting friendships with many of them.

I am currently double majoring in molecular and cellular biology and psychology, with a concentration in behavioral neuroscience. I am on a premed track with plans of becoming a neurologist in the future. I am pretty involved on campus as a chair in my medical fraternity PhiDE, a member of Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, a research assistant in the Decision Neuroscience Lab, and an I-Connect facilitator. My name is Helena Igbo and I am currently a senior in molecular and cellular biology with a minor in chemistry and global studies. I recently did a year-long study abroad program in Newcastle, United Kingdom. I am a premed student with an obsession for cats and traveling. I hope to become a geriatrcian one day and volunteer for Doctors without Borders. In my spare time, I love to hang out with friends as well has volunteer for many societies like IEMS and at Carle Hospital. I also work at the Krannert Center for Performing Arts, which is a great place to see theater productions!
Hi fellow Illini! My name is Adrianna Jelen, and I am a senior in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. I am majoring in molecular and cellular biology, while also pursuing a minor in cemistry and a certificate in neuroscience. I am also greatly involved on our campus and in our community. I volunteer with multiple organizations, assist with research in a couple of labs, and am apart of many RSOs. After I graduate, I will be taking a gap year, during which I plan to be working and applying to medical schools, with the ultimate goal of becoming a pediatrician or cardiologist. I have had a remarkable three years here at the U of I, and can't wait to see what the future holds.
I'm a senior in global studies, with minors in French and earth, society, and environmental studies. Im a native of Champaign-Urbana and an ex-theater nerd. I spent my junior year living in Senegal and doing preliminary work for my senior research project. Ive been involved with Students for Environmental Concerns and other groups at the campus YMCA, as well as with the campus LGBT community. After graduation, I plan to pursue a master's degree in library and information science. When not working on school, I can be found knitting, experimenting in the kitchen, or reading any book that crosses my path.

Hi, my name is Hannah Kaufmann. I am a senior studying actuarial science. My professional goals start with having a full-time position after graduating. As an actuary, you have to pass a number of exams that are similar to going to graduate school. So, for the first few years after graduation, I will be focusing on those. I would really like to live in Chicago for a while and then hopefully move to another city around the country. I also want to start visiting different places around the world, including Greece and Australia.

I am a James Scholar and a part of the political science honors program, so I have plenty of experience in organization and time management to share. I am deeply involved with our official student government, the Illinois Student Senate, where I serve as Chief of Staff and Big Ten campus liaison. I'm Ben Kusinski and I'm a junior from the northwest side of Chicago. I'm majoring in history, with a minor in leadership studies. I'm a Chick Evans Scholar and a soldier in the Illinois Army National Guard. I'm also a member of the Reserve Officer's Training Corps and will commission as an officer in the Army upon graduation. I hopes to make a career out of the military.

After graduation, I plan to go to Graduate school and eventually work in the field of mental health. On campus, I am the vice president for the National Alliance for Mental Illness. I am also the scretary for the American Red Cross Club at Illinois, and the vice president of Partnership Walk. I am also a Counseling Center Paraprofessional. I'm Micaela and I'm a senior at the U of I, graduating a semester early. I'm originally from the border of the Chicago city limits and I am fortunate to be from a diverse neighborhood. I had the pleasure to grow up with people from all walks of life. I am a double major in psychology and spanish. Being a student at U of I has opened up my eyes to limitless opportunities and interests. I spent the summer of 2016 studying abroad in Granada, Spain. I have also been involved on campus in the arts, in Greek life, volunteering at the hospital, and working at Espresso Royale at Grainger Library. I also interned on campus, where I studied child maltreatment and educated students in Champaign-Urbana elementary schools about safety.

The abolishment of the school-to-prison pipeline, synergistic community building, life choices that can affect others; I'm constantly attempting to better myself and the environments that I thrive in. I am a Golden Apple Scholar, I am involved in multiple RSOs on campus, I run my own social justice magazine, and I ran in the Cross Country Club until my foot decided to quit on me (I'm fine now). Hi! My name is Kelly and I am a senior majoring in English. My passion is reading and analyzing books. In my opinion, there is nothing better than losing yourself in a good book, whether it is by the beach or in the English Building. In the near future, I'd like to work for a publishing house and concentrate on literature aimed at young adults. Some life goals are to take a step on every continent, visit the seven wonders of the world, and embrace the many different cultures that I will encounter on my tour of the world.

In the fall, you can find me with the LAS Leaders, hanging with AMPS, or doing research in the psych department. In the future, I am hoping to become a genetic counselor or, if all else fails, to conduct research. Hi LAS Illini! I'm a senior majoring in communication and minoring in leadership studies. During my time at Illinois, I've been the intern for the College of LAS Student Academic Affairs Office and a tutor for the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics. I'm currently a Turner Fellow for the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and the outreach chair for the Goal of Learning Project. Upon graduation, I plan to pursue a master's degree in higher education, and then I hope to work in administration for a university. Hey everyone! My name is Vamsi Naidu and I'm a senior majoring in molecular and cellular biology. I was born and raised in Champaign, however I went to a residential high school in Aurora, Illinois. After that I wanted to be close to family, so I decided to go here. I'm premed and am planning on applying to medical school at the end of the school year. I'll be taking a gap year and want to work as a medical scribe. I'd like to be a cardiologist but I'm not sure yet. I'm extremely passionate about providing medical care to underprivaleged communities and hope to do so once I'm a doctor. I'm a junior from Naperville, Illinois, and I'm currently majoring in molecular and celluar biology. In my time at Naperville Central High School, I took interesting science classes like biotech, anatomy, and molecular biology that led me to discover my passion for science. Through each of these courses, I explored different aspects of biology and gained a greater appreciation of the true breadth of the sciences.
