Students graduating with degrees in the following units are invited to participate:

  • African Studies
  • European Union Studies
  • Global Studies
  • Individual Plans of Study
  • Latin American and Caribbean Studies
  • Political Science
  • Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies
  • South Asian and Middle Eastern Studies

This ceremony is reserved only for students who earned degrees in August 2017, December 2017 (who did not participate in Winter Convocation) and May 2018, or those who plan to finish their degree in August 2018. Degree candidates will receive information in February regarding registration and participation.

Registration will open Thursday, March 1, and close Sunday, April 15. You must register for the ceremony in order to participate and receive tickets for your guests. PhD candidates are also asked to provide the name of the person who will hood you.

Graduation announcements

Personalized graduation announcements may be purchased through the Illini Union Bookstore, 809 S. Wright St., Champaign, or from Herff-Jones. Announcements are also available through local bookstores and copy shops.

Guests may begin entering the hall at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are required for all guests.


Each graduating student will receive four tickets for guests, which are provided free of charge. Graduating students don’t need a ticket, so all four should be distributed to guests.

Those who would like more than four will be able to request additional tickets. However, we cannot guarantee we will be able to honor these requests. The number of additional tickets available will depend on the number of requests, as well as the number of graduating students.

You will be notified on April 18 if your request has been fulfilled.

Tickets for all graduating students will be available for pick up between 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1-5 p.m. May 1 and May 2 in Room 417 of David Kinley Hall. If you are not able to pick up your tickets on those days, please contact Katie Clark.

If you reside outside of the Champaign-Urbana area, please contact Katie Clark to request that your tickets be mailed to you.

The day of the ceremony

Participants are asked to report to the first floor of Gregory Hall at 12:30 p.m., in order to check in and prepare for the processional. You must be wearing your regalia; there will be no spare caps or gowns available.

The convocation will begin with a procession of faculty and administrators, followed by graduating students, into the hall. During the ceremony, you will be called to the stage and your name will be read aloud as you cross the stage and receive your diploma cover. The ceremony will last about one hour.


A professional photographer will be at the ceremony to take your picture as you receive your diploma. You will receive information about how to order these photos after the ceremony.

Obtaining your diploma

Because it is not possible to process grades and prepare degree lists by the day of the commencement, diplomas will be mailed approximately six weeks after graduation.

Please go into the UI Integrate Self-Service application and enter or update "Diploma Address," which is the address the university will use for mailing your diploma.

  • If the diploma is returned to the Office of the Registrar, you will be responsible for providing the correct address and paying for any forwarding mail charges, as well as a processing fee.
  • If your diploma is not returned to the Office of the Registrar, you will be responsible for providing the correct address and paying for the cost of the replacement diploma.

Follow these instructions to change your name. For additional questions, contact Registration Services.

An email from the Office of the Registrar will be sent to all potential graduates about three weeks before commencement asking them to verify their name and address and make corrections if necessary.
