LAS 101 freshman seminar interns

LAS 101 Interns 2016LAS 101 Freshman Seminar Interns are accomplished juniors and seniors who are willing to share their college experiences with first-term students by serving as student mentors.

They each lead a section of the LAS 101 Freshman Seminar and are really excited to meet their students.

They are among the best and brightest of our LAS students and we are very fortunate to have them with us for the fall semester.

Read the bios below to meet the LAS 101 director, graduate assistants, and interns.

Apply to be an LAS 101 Freshman Seminar intern

LAS 101 Freshman Seminar Interns are an incredibly important part of LAS 101, the course that helps our first-year students transition to LAS and the University of Illinois.

An LAS 101 internship offers our best students the opportunity to help others while enhancing their own skills and preparing for their chosen professions or advanced scholarship. Past LAS 101 Interns said they developed many skills, such as public speaking, organization, quick thinking, confidence building, mentoring, and much more.

The main responsibility for LAS Interns is to facilitate and manage all aspects of one LAS 101 class section in fall 2018, which will have between 20 to 25 students. Furthermore, LAS Interns will be responsible for implementing lesson plans aimed at helping first-year students design their first-year experience in LAS and Illinois. Finally, Interns serve as peer mentors by sharing their own personal stories and advice with new students.

Welcome to the University of Illinois and the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences! I'm so excited to serve as the director of LAS 101: Freshman Seminar. This class has been designed to give you, our first-year students, the best start possible on your college careers. You'll learn so much about our campus and the rigors of college life. This class is facilitated by the LAS 101 interns, who are successful upper-class men and women. They are passionate about U of I and want to help you get on the right path toward your own successful years here on campus and beyond. They have some great lessons to share with you. Our teaching assistants (TAs) are incredible graduate students who work closely with the interns. They too are a great resource. Again, welcome to campus, and I look forward to connect with you.

Congratulations! Welcome to Illinois and the College of LAS. I am a doctoral student in the Education Policy, Organization and Leadership Department. My research interests include equity of and access to quality education by minoritized students, politics of education, the experiences of international students in U.S. higher education institutions, and the role of education in attaining socioeconomic equality in emerging economies (especially in Sub-Saharan Africa). I love to teach and am excited to work with you all. I look forward to the bright years ahead, supporting you to navigate college successfully in ways you find fulfilling.

Hi —I'm MJ, the tech liaison for LAS 101 and 102. My primary job is to maintain the Moodle website, but I also help out with program development and events. This is my sixth year with the program, and it's been fun watching the incoming freshmen advance through the college, sometimes becoming LAS 101 interns themselves. Work hard and enjoy your college years — they are over before you know it!!

Jari Minnett Jari Minnett
Hi everyone and welcome to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences! My name is Jari Minnett and I am a second-year doctoral student in Higher Education. My research interests are Black student activism and identity development. I am from Meridian, MS and earned a bachelor's (English) and a master's (Student Personnel/Higher Education) degree from the University of Mississippi. The lessons learned in my freshman seminar course were instrumental to my success in college, and I believe LAS 101 with play a similar role in your collegiate experiences. Best wishes as you begin a new chapter at Illinois. I look forward to meeting you all!
