Degree requirements for all LAS majors

To graduate with a degree from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, all LAS students must fulfill the core requirements listed below. There are variations and additional requirements for each degree, which are outlined below.

Core requirements

The Science and Letters curriculum, which covers more than 70 majors, requires that students complete the college's core requirements as well as requirements specific to each degree. For those specific requirements, see the campus listing of majors and choose your major from the LAS list.

The specialized curriculum majors have some variation in the courses students may choose to fulfill LAS' degree requirements. If you are pursuing one of these curricula, use the requirements listed here as an overall guide but always consult with an advisor in the department that offers the curriculum about the exceptions.

Those in secondary teacher education curriculum should consult with an advisor in the department offering the curriculum or the LAS Coordinator of the Secondary Education Program about requirements.

Additional requirements

Substitutions to major/minor requirements

We allow departments to make two substitutions to published major and minor requirements, typically late in a student's career after every effort has been made to satisfy the stated requirements, or as departments discontinue courses or are unable to offer specific ones regularly or in timely fashion. We will also accept substitutions in instances where students have already taken courses that closely parallel required courses, an option that most often applies to STEM courses. In most other disciplines, we expect the department to make a case for student hardship.

Minimum requirements for all LAS majors

Rules applying to electives, total hours, minimum GPAs and advanced hours, residency, and courses or combination of courses that do not fulfill requirements toward graduation.

Special credit options and restrictions

Other ways of satisfying degree requirements, such as through proficiency exams and independent study (199) courses, study abroad (299), and off-campus study.

Degree certification

Notification of intent to graduate, completion of degree requirements, forgiveness clause, extension of eligibility to enroll, how your degree is certified, if you miss certification deadlines.
